    Human reproduction is a biological process through which humans produce offspring. It maintains continuity of the species and enables transmission of hereditary information from one generation to the next.

    For examination preparation, the chapter connects reproductive anatomy with gamete formation, fertilisation and early embryonic development.

    Male Reproductive System

    Testis and Scrotum

    Location
    The testes are extra-abdominal organs housed in the scrotum.
    Testicular Temperature
    The scrotum maintains testicular temperature approximately 2–3Β°C below core body temperature.
    Testicular Descent
    During embryonic development the testes descend into the scrotum by approximately the seventh month of pregnancy.
    Thermoregulation
    The cremaster muscle assists in elevating or lowering the testes relative to the body wall.
    NEET High-Yield

    Cryptorchidism refers to failure of the testes to descend into the scrotum. The condition may impair spermatogenesis and may lead to infertility.

    Male Reproductive Duct System

    The major sperm pathway can be remembered as:

    Rete Testis β†’ Vasa Efferentia β†’ Epididymis β†’ Vas Deferens β†’ Ejaculatory Duct β†’ Urethra
    • Vasa efferentia arise from the rete testis and open into the epididymis.
    • The vas deferens loops over the urinary bladder and joins the duct of the seminal vesicle to form the ejaculatory duct.
    • The ejaculatory duct opens into the urethra.
    • In males, the urethra serves as a shared urino-genital passage.

    Semen and Hormonal Regulation

    Semen
    Normal human semen is slightly alkaline, with an approximate pH of 7.2–7.8.
    Inhibin
    Inhibin is secreted by Sertoli cells and regulates spermatogenesis mainly through negative feedback on FSH.

    Penis and Erectile Tissue

    • Corpora cavernosa: two columns of erectile tissue.
    • Corpus spongiosum: one column surrounding the urethra.

    Spermatogenesis

    Spermatogenesis occurs inside the seminiferous tubules. A primary spermatocyte undergoes meiosis to ultimately produce spermatids, which differentiate into functional sperm.

    NEET Numerical Concept

    One primary spermatocyte undergoing meiosis produces four spermatids.

    In numerical questions involving degeneration of spermatids, first determine the number of spermatids produced and then account for the fraction that degenerates.

    Female Reproductive System

    Female External Genitalia – Vulva

    Structure Description
    Mons Pubis Cushion of fatty tissue covered by skin and pubic hair.
    Labia Majora Fleshy folds of tissue extending down from the mons pubis and surrounding the vaginal opening.
    Labia Minora Paired folds of tissue located under the labia majora.
    Hymen A membrane that often partially covers the vaginal opening.
    Clitoris A small finger-like structure at the upper junction of the labia minora.
    NEET Homology Point

    The clitoris is homologous to the penis. The notes associate both structures with the embryonic genital tubercle.

    Oogenesis and the Secondary Oocyte

    The female gamete is the ovum. An important conceptual point is that the secondary oocyte is released at ovulation while arrested in metaphase II.

    The secondary oocyte completes meiosis II only after sperm penetration during fertilisation. The second polar body is extruded at this stage.

    Fertilisation, also called syngamy, involves the union of the male and female gametes.

    Acrosomal Reaction

    The acrosome of the sperm contains enzymes that help the sperm penetrate the coverings surrounding the oocyte. The handwritten fertilisation notes specifically highlight hyaluronidase and acrosin in relation to sperm penetration.

    Zona Pellucida and Sperm Recognition

    The fertilisation notes highlight the zona pellucida as a glycoprotein layer containing sperm-binding proteins involved in sperm–oocyte recognition and interaction.

    Extraembryonic Membranes

    Extraembryonic membranes, also called fetal membranes, are structures that form outside the developing embryo. They are temporary protective and supportive structures.

    Amnion
    Associated with the amniotic fluid cushion.
    Chorion
    Contributes to formation of the placenta.
    Yolk Sac
    One of the major extraembryonic membranes.
    Allantois
    One of the major extraembryonic membranes.
